Who we want

Investing in Our People

We know that in order to effectively invest in our borough, we need to invest in our people. Across the service, we have something for everyone, at any stage of their career. If you would like to understand the structure of our team, our structure chart explains more.

Havering is filled with opportunity – both in the scope of work you’ll undertake, but also in our range of job opportunities. We’re looking for ambitious people who want to grow and develop their careers. We’re seeking those who will have a real passion for the projects we’re working on – you’ll need to be ambitious, committed with the drive to get job done. In return, we offer great support and training to get you settled into your role and ongoing professional development to help you thrive and grow.

Our people are as much part of our journey as the work we are doing – together Havering is going places.

"I’ve worked for Havering’s Planning Enforcement Team for just under 3 years and have found it to be a hugely varied role. This variety keeps it interesting - one day you could be doing site visits looking at the commencement of a planning breach, the next day in court giving a witness statement for a prosecution. This variety means that even when you think you’ve seen it all, you haven’t! It’s also good that the nature of the job means working across different teams such as Environmental Health and Building Control which helps give that breadth of experience. Havering is very supportive of any on-going training needs and flexible in working arrangements. It’s also great being on good public transport links and in the town centre of Romford as there’s always something going on after work."

David Colwill,
Team Leader Planning Enforcement

“Working at the London Borough of Havering within the planning service has been a great privilege for me. As a planning officer within the development management team I have had the opportunity to tackle a varied and challenging caseload which has helped me to develop my skills and improve my knowledge. Whilst development management is very deadline focused and can be pressurised, every day provides an opportunity to learn something new and it is the variety of my job that most appeals to me.

As a member of staff here I have always felt supported by my senior colleagues who have encouraged me and supported my personal development. The senior management team communicate closely with all members of staff which has created a positive and open culture and a working environment where people can develop and make a difference.”

Cole Hodder,
Planning Officer

“What I really enjoy about working in Spatial Planning is how varied the work is. Each day is different and provides me with great experience.

We’re right at the heart of taking forward the Council’s vision for delivering the growth and sustainable development in the Local Plan.

We contribute significantly to the Council’s place making role and pushing forward the Council’s strategic transport aspirations to support growth in the borough.

Working in transport planning, I get the opportunity to engage with a wide variety of stakeholders. I deal with Councillors as well as interact with key organisations such as Transport for London, the GLA and Highways England.

All this brings with it the opportunity to really influence how transport is planned in the borough. It’s a really exciting time to be working at Havering and involved in how the borough is developed over the next 20 years.”

Daniel Douglas,
Team Leader Transport Planning
